I am amazed at the response time for what are somewhat conoluted inquiries in Google and ChateGPT--it is instaneous. I can see the vast potential for increasing efficiencies. I am, however, a skeptic. In my limited sample, my city, running a magnificent structural deficit, hasn't mentioned AI in its budget adoption at all. I assign this to labor union support in elections and the council and city manager who find layoffs anathema.
It is great to see that you have started a ‘Substack content collection’ point for lazy readers like me. I perk up anytime that I see your byline at The Dispatch, now I can easily ‘see’ what you have been up to. Hopefully, you will be able to keep the comments open here. I am sometimes annoyed when I want to reply to one of your posts at the ‘sewage site’ but you have (understandably) locked down the reply feature.
I know your focus is the budget/economy angle but I have to say that my biggest fear about AI is what the companies will do with their models when the HUGE bills for the upfront outlays come due. The VCs and stock markets will not be giving them billions and billions forever; what “benefit to humanity” uses will they farm out their electricity powered 24/7 ‘genius workers’ for? If the AI benefits do not naturally translate to cash rather quickly, they will have incentive to loosen the, in Google terms, ‘Do good’ directive to sell services. We have already seen what Grok will do (fake celebrity nudes and racist memes) I doubt that that will be the worst of it.
I look forward to visiting here frequently. I hope you hang out here more often than that ‘other site’. Even though the number of followers will be smaller, it is practically guaranteed to be more civil here.
Have as good a weekend as you can in our troubled times. Mine will be a little brighter knowing that the Tigers will not have to face the Brewers Flame Thrower – Misiorowski (105 mph 😲) unless by some Tigers miracle, they meet in the WS.

I take the potentially naive position that AI will be important but not as world-changing (good or bad) that many hope/fear - at least not for a few decades when, yes, it may evolve in directions we cannot predict. Perhaps you are right that bigger profits will be found in using it for harm, but it all feels so hypothetical right now. Perhaps I just lack foresight. P.S. - Glad you get to watch Skubal, please do not trade him to the Dodgers or Braves!
